How To Figure Out Your Skin Type

  • December 11, 2021

Skin is the largest organ of our body and it is very important to take good care of it. Each one of us is born with different skin types. Knowing our skin type is very important to start with a skincare routine that is suitable for our skin. When it comes to skincare, most of us want to use the best products for our skin but don’t know which products are suitable for our skin. Plenty of skincare products are available in the market today and selecting the right product is a tough task. Using a single unsuitable product can harm your skin. You can protect your skin from unpleasant reactions and other negative effects by selecting skincare products based on your skin type. So, before you spend your hard-earned money on skincare products, you should understand why knowing your skin type is crucial and how to determine your skin type correctly.

You must be aware of the common skin types such as normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive skin. Even though we have a certain skin time, it’s not the same throughout our lifetime. Keep in mind that our skin type changes over time. The following are some of the factors that determine your skin type:

  • Genetics
  • Climate
  • Hormones
  • medication
  • Diet

Having said that, let us move on to the steps involved in determining your skin type correctly. There are two methods for knowing your skin type, they are:

Method-1–Bare Face Method

Step 1:

Clean skin is required to perform this test. So, first, wash your face using a mild cleanser or face wash to remove all the dust, dirt, oil, and makeup.

Step 2:

Gently pat dry your skin with a soft towel and do not apply any moisturizer or serum to your face. Leave your skin as it is after the wash.

Step 3:

Wait for an hour to check out the changes that occur in your skin. During this time, please don’t touch your face. After one hour, observe your skin.

Based on the changes in your skin after one hour, you can figure out your skin type:

Dry Skin–If your skin feels tight and itchy with some slight flaky patches, then you have dry skin.

Normal Skin–If your skin is neither too oily nor too dry and looks even and good, then you have normal skin.

Oily Skin—If your skin looks shiny and feels oily, especially in the T-zone, then you have oily skin.

Combination skin—If you have an oily T-zone and feel dryness in the remaining part of your skin such as the cheeks and jawline, you have combination skin.

Sensitive skin—If your skin feels irritated, itchy, and in some cases looks reddish, then you have sensitive skin.

Method-2–Blotting Sheet Method

This is an alternative method to find out your skin type. This method is easy and quick when compared to the bare face method.

Step 1:Take a blotting sheet and gently tap it on different areas of your face without pressing it too much into the skin.

Step 2:Now, hold the blotting sheet up to the light and check the amount of oil in it. Based on the amount of oil, you can figure out your skin type.

Normal skin—If you find a little bit of oil then you have normal skin.

Dry Skin–If there is no oil in the sheet, then you have dry skin.

Oily skin—If the blotting paper is soaked in oil, you have oily skin.

Combination skin—If you get oil when you tap your nose, forehead, and chin only, then you have combination skin.

Sensitive skin—If your skin feels itchy, irritated, and reddish then you have sensitive skin.

Now that you have got an idea to check your skin type, you can choose products that match your skin type to get the best results.
